Wake up at 1am and drive to the starting point for the ascent of Mount Merapi with its crater called KAWAH IJEN. "Kawah" means crater in Indonesian.
The hike is of moderate difficulty, 3km on foot for 500 meters (positive) of elevation gain to the summit. Sulfur vapors can be annoying depending on the wind. You arrive at the summit and enjoy breathtaking landscapes that are revealed as the mist dissipates and the color of the turquoise lake in the crater whose water is the most acidic on the planet. From the crater come back men smiling and loaded with approximately 70kg of sulfur that they collect to resell to the private company that takes care of the mine, they are paid by the weight of sulfur they are carried.
Return to parking and you will be taken to your hotel in Bali.

- Kawah Ijen is closed to visitors every Friday of the first week of the month due to environmental cleanup activities.
- For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden to descend into the Kawah Ijen crater or the sulfur mining area.
